Cleaning Window Blinds The Quick And Easy Way

Cleaning Window Blinds The Quick And Easy Way

December 14, 20233 min read

Blinds can totally transform not only your windows but the feel and look of a room and are a great design feature. To keep blinds looking fresh, clean them often. How you clean them depends on what type and material they are, from wood to roller to vertical.

With warmer days and sunshine, now is the time to get started on spring cleaning, and we have some tips on how to clean window blinds correctly.

How to Clean Wood Blinds

  • Get rid of dust quickly using your vacuum and soft brush attachment.

  • When your blinds are dirty, use warm, soapy water (warm water and dishwashing liquid). Make sure you squeeze a lot of the excess water from your cloth, particularly with wood blinds, so the water does not saturate and prevent spots, discolouration and warping.

  • Turn the blinds one way and wash them, then turn them the opposite way to clean the other side.

  • When cleaning horizontal blinds, work top to bottom.

  • Apply a good quality furniture polish. Spray the polish straight onto your cloth and wipe each slat individually. Try to avoid touching the cords.

  • Don’t have furniture polish? That’s okay! Many wood blinds are treated with a unique finish to repel dirt and stains, which should help reduce the need for polish, and you can wipe them with a clean cloth.

  • Once your blinds are clean, maintain them by using your vacuum or giving them a simple wipe with a duster every week.

How to Clean Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds are cleaned differently depending on whether they are fabric or vinyl.

For vinyl:

  • Clean your vinyl blinds like you would wood blinds. Skip the furniture polish and use the dishwashing liquid and warm water method instead.

  • Cleaning each slat could be very time-consuming if you have many blinds to maintain. Instead, consider putting your blinds into the tub and gently washing them with a sponge/mop.

  • Allow your blinds to dry thoroughly before putting them back up, and always clean vertical blinds from left to right to avoid unhooking them.

For fabric blinds:

  • Get rid of excess dust using a lint roller.

  • If the blinds are stained, apply warm soapy water to the affected area and then allow it to dry.

  • If the stain is very stubborn, you may be better off calling in a professional to clean them (or replacing them altogether).

How to Clean Roller Blinds

  • Vacuum regularly to avoid dust build-up and discolouration of the fabric.

  • Unroll the blind fully until it is flat.

  • Like your vertical fabric blinds, apply warm soapy water to stained areas.

  • Make sure the cloth isn’t too saturated, as this will cause more mess. Plus, your blinds will take longer to dry.

  • Again, if the stain won’t budge, take your blinds to be professionally cleaned, or consider replacing them.
